This year’s inductee into the Ohio Movers Hall of Fame, has been a part of
the moving industry his entire life. From his earliest memory, he has been
involved in some aspect of the business, from sweeping the warehouse, folding
furniture pads, stacking packing material, etc. As a young boy, he was paid by
the pound to unwrinkled paper and put it in rolls so it could be reused for
packing material. He was a part of the advertising team, at local home shows,
setting up displays and manning the booth. As soon as he was able to carry a
chair, he was carrying furniture to the dock to be loaded on a truck.
He learned to drive a truck at a very early age. Since the streets around the
warehouse were not heavily traveled, he could be seen driving trucks up to be
cleaned out and fueled in preparation for trips.
When he was finally old enough to drive, he made his first long distance run out
west. This proved to be yet another one of those valuable and expensive learning
experiences, when the call came in to the office that a set of brakes had burned
up coming through Donner’s Pass. That day he learned the value of equipment and
hiring experienced drivers.
After college in 1975, he began his career as an Ohio Mover, working along side
his father. He has served on numerous boards, Round tables, Agent Associations
and state associations, which work for the betterment of the industry.
This year’s inductee is active in his community. He has served on committees and
political campaign efforts at both the local and state level. In 1987, he was
given a key to the city, for his work in bringing the Statue of Liberty exhibit
to the community. He has been an active Board Member of the Chamber of Commerce,
United Way Allocations, Epilepsy Association, Board of Zoning Appeals; Lion’s
Club and let’s not forget all the committees he has served for the Ohio
Association of Movers. He contributes generously to his community, by supporting
various efforts, which enhance the quality of life in his hometown. He has also
served in a variety of areas at his local church.
As you can see, this year’s Ohio Mover’s Hall of Fame inductee has experienced
the moving industry from, in the warehouse, on the job, behind the wheel of a
truck, and behind a desk. He brings a first hand working knowledge to every
aspect of the industry.
By now you may have figured out that we are talking about Gary Mathis. Gary is
married to his wife Connie and they have 3 children, Brandon, who is working
along side of his dad and grandfather, Brooke, who graduated from Anderson
University and is currently employed by Big Brothers, Big Sisters in Anderson
and Brianne, who just entered her freshman year at OSU Newark branch (Brianne
says she is going to live with “Gary” forever. He also has a brother, Bob, a
sister, Mary, and another sister, Carol. And let’s not forget Gary’s father —
the man who started the business in 1948 — Ivan Mathis.
And last, but not least, is Gary’s philosophy on life: H A D — Honesty,
Attitude, Dependability!
Please join me in congratulating Gary Mathis as this year’s recipient of the
Ohio Movers Hall of Fame award.
